  1. 1921- . Czechoslovak politician, chair of the
  2. federal assembly from 1989. As first
  3. secretary of the Communist Party 1967-69, he
  4. launched a liberalization campaign (the
  5. Prague Spring). He was arrested by invading
  6. Soviet troops, and expelled from the party
  7. 1970. In 1989 he gave speeches at
  8. pro-democracy rallies, and in Dec, after the
  9. overthrow of the hardline regime, he was
  10. elected speaker of the Czechoslovak
  11. parliament.
